We Take 2 Ferries to Get to Whidbey Island

                                September 18

It was a 2 ferry day, leaving Vancouver Island early for Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula.

Then catching a ferry in Port Townsend in the afternoon, for Whidbey Island. This took about a half hour and delivered us mid island to Fort Casey. We still had a little time to explore the fort before crossing the island to check in to our VRBO.

The fort has a century of history, though has never fired a shot in battle, through its retirement in 1945.

Coupeville is a small tourist town perched on the shores of Penn Cove. Everything is within walking distance and views of the cove are lovely.

Our rental is just big enough for our needs.

Had pizza for dinner with water views. There are deer everywhere including a family that greeted us at our rental, and this buck that wandered by during dinner.

These beautiful Madrona Trees are everywhere with a bark burnished like fine furniture.  The many rafts in the background are, I expect for growing the locally famous Penn Cove mussels.

Next was a trip to Deception Pass for a hike up the Goose Rocks Trail. This beautiful old bridge connects the island to the rest of the world.

Back to Coupeville for lunch. I told you that this place is cute!

In the afternoon we started with a forest walk through a sculpture park.

Imagine that. We found a garden to visit!

Our last stop was a hike along the bluffs at Ebey's Landing.
